From the vantage of his celestial corporate campus, God nurses a seething anger. Humankind’s escalating wickedness and depravity have exceeded even his threshold for tolerance and patience. As Chairman and CEO of the Universe, he seeks a measure with sufficient totality to wipe the slate clean and start over. The answer is an asteroid, a big one, redirected toward Planet Earth. The countdown to Doomsday has begun. Trusted members of his senior staff harbor misgivings. They counsel patience, seemingly to no avail. God shows no sign of wavering. He exhibits a grim determination to carry through on his plan to wreak devastation on an irredeemable human race. But as he watches events unfold during the tense final hours before the asteroid’s impact, inwardly he begins to grapple with the enormity of snuffing out life on Earth on such a cataclysmic scale. The fate of the world and humankind, his creations, hangs in the balance.

"GOD ONLY KNOWS" does not fit into easy categorization, but is first-rate read which pulls you in on multiple levels. Without giving away the ingenious plot, there are three main reasons why this book engages your heart and your "cellules grises" as Hercule Poirot would say.

GOD AS CEO: The first is the interplay between God as CEO of the Universe along with his celestial minions and earth-bound institutions and the goings on of ordinary human beings including the main protagonist, Derek Hancock. Normally such a literary "conceit" would be worthy of a short story, not a novel. Yet author pulls this off by the process akin to removing the layers of an onion where each layer adds depth, intricacy and understanding, particularly in the heavens where God has subordinates who are not always so subordinate.

SCIENCE VS RELIGION: There is a reason why John Grisham and David Baldacci (Amelia Islanders like Mr. Hitchcock) are #1 bestsellers, not authors about the sciences and faith. And yet the tension that makes "God Only Knows" such page-turner fiction is precisely the back-and-forth between detailed descriptions of religious faith and observances and highly technical what is clearly "rocket science." The author has a special knack to make both the hard to explain in both areas understandable without being preachy, overly technical or most importantly boring.

SUPERIOR WRITING: The author gets special marks for his skill with words; he is a true wordsmith. Many popular thrillers throw words onto the page where it is clear that moving the narrative forward, not word choice, is most important. In Mr. Hitchcock's case, his excellent selection and precise use of words make the narrative flow smoothly and the explanation of what's going on clearer. I loved the use of "sandpapering the jagged nerves" to describe an impending difficult decision. I also found that I would stop and reflect on a given word and recognize that only was it perfect choice but also that I would have chosen a more prosaic or less precise word or phrase if I were the author.

My rating for "God Only Knows" would be 4.5 STARS if Amazon would let me, but I have put 5 in hopes people will dig into this review and then buy the book. There was a plot loose-end which remained untied in my view and the names Senators Cruze and Sanctimonium were unnecessary as the descriptions made each character's political reference quite clear. But these are small quibbles. All in all, this is an inaugural effort well worth your time, especially as you will find yourself debating in your head the moral and ethical dilemmas in between chapters. Well done!

NB This reviewer plays tennis in a group with the author. I have had a number of friends in the past ask me to look at their works and frankly they were mostly not noteworthy. When Mr. Hitchcock did the same, I said yes because I wanted to be supportive, but also bought the Kindle version because it was the cheapest. Those who know me know that I am fair to a fault, so it is with great pleasure that I endorse "God Only Knows." Amelia Island is becoming a mecca of the arts with annual book, chamber music, arts and handicraft festivals. Yes, Mssrs. Grisham and Baldacci do have homes here. And now we can add another name to our expanding pool of local authors with Tom Hitchcock.

God Only Knows Tom Hitchcock 9781541304918 Books Reviews

If you're an Episcopalian with a sense of humor, you'll love this book. If you're not, you'll probably still love it. There's something for everyone here. Hitchcock pokes fun at politicians, the military, the press, religious zealots, at the same time he's telling a potentially scary story through the eyes of Derek Hancock, a engineer for a space program, whom God has made His mouthpiece. The book will make you ponder how you imagine God, Jesus, the Holy Ghost and heaven. Hitchcock's heavenly beings will make you laugh out loud, but there's an undercurrent between them that pushes the story toward what could be a cataclysmic crash on shore. A great read!!
Tom Hitchcock's "Only God Knows" is a very timely book (dealing with such issues of violence, climate change, environmental concerns) written from a most unique perspective. One does not need to be of any particular religious persuasion, or any persuasion at all, to enjoy the conversations that God has with his senior staff regarding what to do with earth and the people on it. We thoroughly enjoyed the thoughtful discussions as well as the somewhat dry humor that shows up at times. Quite engaging. In fact, we would have liked more of those. There is a point in the middle of the book that moved slowly, but we would encourage readers to keep going. The conversations, wrap up at the end are worth getting to. And, as we mentioned, the issues that are brought up are issues we are struggling with in the world today, making this, we think, an great book for a book club read and discussion.
An asteroid on its way to bring the End of the World in a way nobody ever dreamed of. What if the Book of Revelation wasn't really how God intended to do things-- or he suddenly changed his mind? Tom Hitchcock has come up with an inspired premise and takes a unique approach to telling the story. You're drawn into the lives of very human characters watching as death--for everyone--comes closer by the hour, and as they look desperately for any possibility of a last-minute rescue . The tension builds inexorably, and Hitchcock's style intertwines quirky irreverence, interesting science, and startling twists of every kind. A fun but thoughtful story -- and a surprise conclusion.
I enjoyed so many aspects of this book and highly recommend it. To begin, any story that engages the human mind in the possibility that “God will come again” makes for a fascinating subject matter since the majority of humans conceive of a God in one form or another. The central theme of the book asks the question, if God wiped us out, Noah style, just short of a complete genocide, what would the humans who survive be like? Would they continue to believe in God after the devastation that would be attributed to “Him”? If so, will they continue to be sinful? Will the wealthy who survive take care of the poor? Would only the poor survive since they are the “meek who shall inherit the Earth” and would they be able to finally overcome poverty on their own in the absence of other influences? This is a question that I asked myself, not one from the author, but that’s the point. It engages the reader to ask questions central to the human condition. God puts us on a collective death bed when philosophical questions are usually asked. God tells the books hero, Derek Hancock, why He is destroying His prized creation, Planet Earth. While lots of things are making God angry, the Earthlings claim to know the mind of God, and to speak on His behalf, is the biggest issue. After all, “God only knows”. The clever part of this book is that, while it’s philosophical in many respects, and faith itself is examined, it also pokes fun at the way humans communicate now through social media and the influence that 24/7 news cycles have on current events. God has been updated to life in 2017 which provides many laugh out loud moments. This comment is a tad long, but when God Almighty is the subject matter, it’s a challenge to be brief.
