The author provides her analysis of what works well in her classroom and the students' stories provide what happens when there is encouragement "to feel and to live" a curriculum, in a shared, safe environment. I recall, in my own school years, a student who was rowdy or out of step was disciplined by being separated from his or her classmates, to sit in a hall - alone - in front of the office of the vice principal whom was not very known. The practice still stands in most schools today. Ms. Jacopetti presents a theory of "attachment" rather than abandonment for all students. This book speaks to educators, policy makers, and parents to re-think how children can best learn. I have flagged pages in the book to re-read to better understand the evolving message of the author. It is a book for parents who want to be an advocate for their children and how they can learn best. This book begs further questions and conversations.

What a joyful celebration of children, learning, and teaching. Without being dogmatic about any narrowly-defined school of thought, Jacopetti describes what's broken in our approach to educating our children, and also lays out the solutions based on her experiences in the classroom. Jacopetti and her lively students will live on in your heart.
I have always loved Waldorf education, but vacillated on sending my daughter to a private local Waldorf school for many reasons. But in reading through this book, everything about the Waldorf education system just 'clicks' for me and makes sense. In the chapter "The Arts are not Extras" it explains that the arts are not just enrichment to education and learning, but that they are actually a vital part of learning. And how Waldorf in general is designed to instill a lifelong love of learning. This book is immensely interesting, not just to educators, but to parents alike, just like myself.
Jacopetti's book shares her vast wisdom gleaned from her decades of teaching children of all ages and backgrounds in a variety of schools and settings, and most recently, the Waldorf schools. She weaves together research from experts on how children learn while offering personal anecdotes to illustrate them. Successful education by its very nature is child-focused. Cookie-cutter "education" where every child is "taught" to pass standardized tests is the anthesis of a child-centered education system.
