Grinding It Out The Making of McDonald's is Ray Kroc's rags-to-riches story of how he built the fast-food behemoth McDonald's from the ground up. His book has been widely recognized as a business executive's bible for how to succeed. Kroc narrates his life story and demonstrates how the grit and determination he used as a paper cup salesman led him through a series of twists and turns to meet the McDonald brothers, Richard and Maurice, who were running a successful hamburger stand in San Bernardino, California. This is a summary of the story of the birth of McDonald's. While the original has been required reading for entrepreneurs for decades, a casual reader will be better served by this briefer form.The main points that this summary makes are:
1- Selling ice cream shake machines prepared salesman, Ray Kroc with the skills he needed to bring McDonald's from a food cart to a multi-national empire. I like the discussion here of his age, and how age acts as an indicator for success in business. Experience counts.
2- McDonald's unique franchise system was Kroc's greatest accomplishment. How it works, including its strengths and failings, is covered in modest detail.
3- The original McDonald's brothers had a tense relationship with Kroc, sometimes interfering with his efforts to build the empire. The truth of the specifics has been debated, but undisputed is the fact that Kroc eventually bought the name outright in 1961.
4- McDonald's was able to grow rapidly, successfully, by virtue of its simplicity.

I found this very interesting. McDonald's is a part of the scenery pretty much everywhere. It's ubiquitous and uniform (its blessing and its bane) and it is interesting to read the story of it, but I don't think I'd want to invest the time to read it in full. I found the summary sufficient.
